The eventual champion may be determined today when leader WASA travels to St Anthony's College Ground, Westmoorings, in a battle against second-placed West Side Superstarz, in the blink/bmobile National Super League (NSL). Kick-off is at 3.30 pm.
The match is expected to be a thriller with both teams coming off victories against Pro League opposition, only two days prior in the Toyota Classic competition. WASA, which recorded a 2-1 win over St Ann's Rangers on Friday, currently sits top of the table on 40 points, with only three matches left to play. But, just three points back and in the runner-up position lies Westside Superstarz, which has had thus far one of its most memorable seasons in any competition.
The Nigel Grosvenor-coached West Side was a thorn in the side of the newest addition to the TT Pro League Central FC, with the former team advancing to the quarterfinal stage of the Cup competition after dropping the favourite on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw at full time. It was none other than the team's leading scorer Troy Thompson, who found the back of the net.
WASA also proved to be a handful against its professional opponent on Friday, with Glen Walker popping up with a 90th minute winner. With the win and a first-leg victory against West Side on its side, the team will start as favourite to seal a positive result.
The "Water Boys" will be hoping to emulate the first-leg result which saw them walk away with a 1-0 victory at home courtesy of another strike in added time from Jahhan Hernandez. That win effectively gave WASA its first league lead of the season, which has since been also shared between West Side and bmobile Joe Public.
The defending champion, Joe Public, is not out of the competition yet. The "Eastern Lions", who fell just short of another Toyota Classic upset on Friday after losing to T&TEC on penalty kicks, will host knockout champion Stokely Vale at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya, at 3.30 pm. Among the most impressive results for the NSL clubs on Friday was Stokely Vale's 5-0 demolition of TT Pro League's Police.
With most eyes set on the potential title-deciders, the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella will stage a match where the bottom two teams, host Club Sando and Biche United, battle to get out of the relegation zone, with time running out.
Of course, a win for either team will not take them out of the bottom three positions but both, in particular Biche, which remains with a match in hand, will be hoping that momentum sees it soar up with four matches to play.
