Title-holder, DirecTV?W Connection will have their eyes set on securing a semifinal spot in this year's Toyota Classic when it faces one of the three round-of-16 giant killers, WASA in one of four quarterfinal matches today.
The meeting between W Connection, two-time winner of the tournament and WASA takes place at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella from 8pm and will be preceded by another quarterfinal, featuring, North East Stars and T&TEC, in the only all-T&T Pro League fixture.
Down at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, the two other National Super League clubs, still in the competition, Stokely Vale and West Side Super Starz will be hoping to continue their run when they face Pro League duo, Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA and Defence Force, respectively from 6pm.
However, all eyes will be on the Marabella venue where the "Savonetta Boys", winners in 2005 and last year, 5-4 on penalty-kicks over T&TEC, will look to avoid falling victims to the "Water Boys" who dumped Pro League's St Ann's Rangers out of the competition, 2-1 at the first-hurdle.
Friday, W Connection started its defence with a 5-0 hammering of Defence Force's Super League line-up at Marabella led by braces from Joevin Jones r and Jerrel Britto while WASA followed up its shock win over Rangers by beating title challengers West Side Super Starz 2-0 on Sunday.
In the opener, the Sangre Grande-based North East Stars will also be eager to improve of last season's quarterfinal appearance, but in order to achieve that goal they will need to deny the "Electricity Boys", 4-3 penalty-kicks winners over Joe Public, after a 1-1 draw a chance at a second straight final.
At Mucurapo, Pro League duo, Caledonia and Defence Force will both start as favourites to advance but will be mindful of being over confident against their Super League opponents. Caledonia, already winners of the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship and First Citizens Cup this season edged past 1st FC Santa Rosa 3-2 in the round-of-16 and will be keen to improve on that showing against Stokely Vale which slammed Pro League's Police 5-0 and is coming off a 1-1 draw with Joe Public on Sunday.
The "Teteron Boys", meanwhile were comfortable 4-0 victors over 1976 Tobago Phoenix led by a Devorn Jorsling double and faces a tricky contest in West Side Starz, who ousted Pro League debutants, Central FC 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
The winners of the Caledonia/Stokely Vale match will meet the Stars/T&TEC winner in Friday's semifinal while the winners of the Defence Force/West Side Starz and W Connection/WASA tie meet in the other. The final is carded on December 7 in which the winner takes home $50,000 and the runner-up, $20,000.
