La Romaine Jetstars topped the standings with a 148-56 thrashing of San Fernando CSM on Thursday evening as it continued to dominate South Sector Two in the Hoop of Life Community Basketball League. This was La Romaine’s second triple-figure score in as many matches and the highest score in the league thus far.
Commandeering Jetstars was forward Dereck Boxhill, who notched an astounding 45 points, outscoring his fellow forward Adrian Joseph by only four points. Joseph ended the with an incredible 41 points and 12 rebounds. From the first quarter, La Romaine began moving the ball across the court like a team on a mission as Boxhill exercised his turnovers intimidating the San Fernando natives.
CSM’s Clint Phillips put on a brave face to change the tempo, but without much help from his fellow teammates, he was unable to capture most of the rebounds that kept going Jetstars way. This was the same manner in which the boys from La Romaine treated Marabella United when they took them on in their first encounter on November 11, in a 103-84 win.
In the North Sector, riding high with two wins and four points to share the top of the standings with Laventille, Morvant dropped on the leaderboard following a 79-58 win by Caledonia. Morvant had won their two previous matches by beating Beetham 79-66 and then whipping Belmont 76-40.
Caledonia, playing on their home turf, took command of the game from the beginning and never looked back seeing their centre Kyron Joseph garner a 23-point match-high with two rebounds and five steals. Christopher Lares and Dextroy Manswell finished with 17 points each for the visitors.
In Central, Longdenville faced a tough challenge on Thursday as it took on one of Central’s toughest teams, Edinburgh 500 in a low-scoring but hard fought encounter which saw the Longdenville team, edging out Edinburgh by a point, 45-44.
Both teams came into the match-up with lots of hope and keen interest from the fans as they both outplayed St Helena in earlier matches. Longdenville beat St Helena 79-46, while four days before Edinburgh outshot the Saints 69-48.
However, they had to settle for a low score as both teams found it difficult to get pass the 50-point mark.
This win puts Longdenville on top of the standings in Central with three wins, no losses for six points. While Edinburgh stands at two wins, one loss for a tally of five points. In the North Western Sector of the community league, Diego Martin scored a 74-58 over St James. This was on Wednesday evening.
