The John O'Brien-trained six-year-old roan grey horse Bruceon­th­eloose yes­ter­day won the fea­ture Stew­ards Cup event over 1,200 me­tres for the sec­ond time in three years. This was at San­ta Rosa Park in Ari­ma.

Bruceon­th­eloose at­tempt­ed to join a very se­lect group of back-to-back win­ners of the Stew­ards Cup last year but had to set­tle for sec­ond be­hind Sig­nal Alert, which de­nied him by a short-head in a heart-break­er.

The Tres Ami­gos-owned Bruceon­th­eloose ex­act­ed his re­venge on Sig­nal Alert when he won the grade one event by two lengths from Sig­nal Alert, with Sa­cred Trust back in third.

The sta­tis­tics were against the Glenn Mendez-trained Sig­nal Alert ac­com­plish­ing the feat of back-to-back wins though, as on­ly five hors­es have man­aged to re­peat in the 64 pre­vi­ous edi­tions of the

Sprint Cham­pi­onship of the South­ern Caribbean.

From the off, the pace was set by Smart Amer­i­can and Sig­nal Alert with Ricky Jadoo aboard, as Bruceon­th­eloose tracked the lead­ers un­der No­bel Abrego. In close at­ten­dance were Read­be­tweend­lines, Ig­ni­tion Coil and Gab­by's Gold.

How­ev­er, at the far turn Abrego showed his hand as he cruised up to join the leader on the out­side and looked to be full of run­ning. At the cor­ner, Bruceon­th­eloose joined Sig­nal Alert in the run to the line as Sa­cred Trust was pro­duced with his run. Once again, the crowd rose to their feet as Sig­nal Alert and Bruceon­th­eloose set­tled down to bat­tle to the fin­ish.

It was Bruceon­th­eloose edg­ing ahead though to cop the $240,000 purse Stew­ards Cup, in the time of 1:11.4.

Rid­ing ho­n­ours for the day fell to Emile Ram­sam­my, who rode two win­ners on the ten-race card while train­ing ho­n­ours for went to John O'Brien who sad­dled two win­ners.
