The John O'Brien trained Gold Rush turned what was considered a very competitive Stud Farm Association Trial Stakes over 1,350 metres, into a procession as yesterday's first day of the 2013 racing season got going at Santa Rosa Park, Arima.
Sent off as the 6/5 favourite punters never had an anxious moment as the Roma Sagan Maraj owned chestnut colt quickened away impressively from his rivals in the final 400 metres under a confident Ramsammy.
At the far turn, Ramsammy was clearly on the best horse as the son of Big Country began to power clear of his rivals with stablemate Hyatt Princess the closest pursuer. With 200 metres left to run, it was one way traffic as the O'Brien inmate just powered clear of Stablemate Hyatt Princess as St Ann's second Heidi Tzippi stayed on well to be third.
Gold Rush recorded the time of 123.66 for the trip which was faster than the time recorded for the St Ann's Stakes.
A happy Ramsammy said, "He did it well. "He was always traveling superbly and really won in the style of a useful horse."
Champion trainer O'Brien stated, "That was a good performance. He recorded a time which was faster than that recorded by the fillies in the St Ann's. "We are all aware that the boys are way better than the fillies at present because with that time he would have been beaten in the St James Stakes."
In the co-feature First Citizens First Sprint run over 1200 metres which is open to three year olds, the Merlin Samlalsingh's owned Star Entertainer, well supported in the market went down by a half a length to the Terrance Thomas trained Key Chain.
The pair pulled clear of It Is Alleged in the final 200 metres but the Stephan Narinesingh owned Key Chain showed great heart to outbattle Star Entertainer to the line.
Key Chain recorded the time of 1:15.1 for the trip. Training honours for the day fell to O'Brien who saddled two winners while riding honours fell to Ramsammy who also rode two winners.
