T&T junior golfers competing in Miami at the Junior Orange Bowl and the World Junior Challenge in Palm Harbor proudly carried their country's flag and excelled in two major tournaments at the end of December.
Matthew Marquez, who qualified to play in the Junior Orange Bowl Golf Tournament by winning the 16-17 age group boys division in the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships, had an excellent start to the tournament shooting a 67 to be in second place after day one.
Marquez followed this fantastic round up with rounds of 72, 77 and 75 to finish in 25th position out of a field of 62 champions from countries such as England, Sweden, France, Germany, South Africa, South Korea, Japan, USA, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Columbia etc. The tournament was played on the Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, Miami.
Sachin Kumar, Andrei Collins and Wan Ju Lee competed at the World Junior Challenge with Sachin playing in the 14 & under division with rounds of 72, 74, 79 and finishing second to Sam Jung of the USA.
Andrei Collins, competing in the boys 15-19 age group, finished in 12th place shooting rounds of 78, 74 and 78.
The T&T Golf Association offered its congratulations to the players on their performances under trying windy and cold conditions and TTGA president Kenny Attai stated that it showed how far our golfers could go with the necessary exposure to overseas competition.
T&T is competing in the Copa de las Americas-a tournament for South, Central and North America this week at the Doral Blue Monster Course in Miami. The team comprises Matthew Marquez and Talin Rajendranath in the men's division, and Monifa Sealy and Kelsey Lou Hing in the women's division.
