Jamaica earns first win in CT20
Jamaica recorded their first win in the Caribbean T20 last night when they defeated the Windward Islands by 12 runs, in the opening match of the double header, at the Queen’s Park Oval. Jamaica lost to Barbados on Tuesday night and had their first match against T&T washed out on Sunday but survived a low scoring affair which was reduced to 17 overs because of bad weather, to score their first win.
The Jamaicans had their captain Tamar Lambert (3-10) and left arm pacer Krishna Santokie (3-22) to praise for their success. The Windwards looked well set at 65-2 when Lambert removed Kenny Lesporis (19). He then bowled the Windwards captain Darren Sammy and Miles Bascombe both for ducks as Windwards whimpered to 66-5. From there on it was an uphill task and when Dave Bernard bowled Duncan Fletcher, the game was as well as over. Earlier, Danza Hyatt and Andre McCarthy were the only Jamaicans to come to terms with the slow nature of the Queen’s Park Oval pitch.
With the rain hanging around Darren Sammy won the toss and asked the Jamaicans to have first strike. It was a struggle from ball one as the pitch continued to play slow, as it has from ball one in this tournament. Nkrumar Bonner and John Campbell playing their third innings on this pitch looked at sea and it was no surprise that both were back in the dug out with only 34 runs on the board. Skipper Lambert promoted to number three in the batting order in this tournament played a calm hand but as soon as aggression became the order, he fell for 16 made in 19 balls.
It was at this point that Hyatt and McCarthy took over and added 51 runs in 40 balls for the fourth wicket. Just as Hyatt looked as if he could take Jamaica to a decent score he fell for a well played 44. His innings spanned 33 balls and included four sixes. McCarthy followed soon after for 19 and Jamaica closed on 116 for six off their 17 allotted overs. The pick of the bowlers for the Windwards was left arm spinner Garey Mathurin with 2/18 off four overs, while there was a wicket apiece for fellow spinners Liam Sebastien and Shane Shillingford.
