Keshorn Walcott's phenomenal gold medal performance in the men's javelin finals at the London Olympics last August was the talking point at the NAAA Awards Ceremony at Capital Plaza on Saturday.
Young Adel Colthrust said he was elated at Walcott's achievement and wants to win gold too. The San Fernando Boys RC standard five student is already making waves on the local and regional track and field circuit.
Colthrust captured the NAAA Top under 13 boys award for the second straight year and has run unbeaten over the 100 and 200m in 2011 and 2012. At the Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) Games in Jamaica last July, the Learie Alleyne-Forte coached sprinter showed his class winning the 100m event in a games record of 11.28 seconds.
Colthrust, of Southern Athletics, said he was happy on winning the top under 13 award for another year and noted that global spring kings Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake, both of Jamaica, inspire him. His mother (Nicole Phillip) and grand father (Emmanuel Phillip) were on hand to celebrate with him.
Top Boys under 17 field event winner Kenejah Williams said Walcott has paved the way for younger athletes. "He showed us that anything is possible so I am trying to do as well as him."
Williams captured the Carifta boys under 17 and CAC Junior boys under 18 discus titles. The Tobago Falcons thrower said he his training is going well for the 2013 season. He credits his Scarborough Secondary Physical Education teacher Irwin Des Vignes for getting him involved in track and field. Williams is coached by Wayne Stewart.
Williams' Tobago Falcons club-mate Chelsea James took the top Girls under 17 field award after her success in the shot put at the Carita Games where she won in a games record.
James said she is looking forward to retaining her title at this year's Carifta Games in the Bahamas and also want to compete at the World Youth (Under 18) Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine from July 10-14.
Kernesha Spann (Neon Trackers) was named to Most Outstanding Female Honours after taking the CAC Junior Girls Under 20 400m hurdles event. Spann said the award has motivated her to win the trophy in 2012. Spann earned a scholarship to Western Texas Junior College in the USA and will begin her studies later this month.
