Goal shoot Jenice Smith converted 14 of 21 attempts as University of Southern Caribbean stunned defending champions TSTT 34-17 when the Alternative Division of the 23rd season of the Courts All Sectors Netball League (ASNL) jumped off at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Orange Grove Road, Tacarigua, on Tuesday.
Goal attacks Gabrielle Gooding with 11 from 26 and Afiya Alexis with nine from 12 also made valuable contributions for USA which led 9-3, 17-7 and 24-11 at the end of the first three quarters.
For TSTT, which, on Saturday, repeated as divisional champions in the opening day knockout competition, Sophia Harper scored ten of 24 attempts and Alicia John seven of 13.
Also in winners row on Tuesday was University of T&T, 36-28 over Police, led by Jameela Mc Carthy's 26 goals from 40 attempts.
Chris-Ann Petrovani with six from seven, Kimberly Collette with three from seven and Latisha Pitt (one from five) were the other contributors for UTT, which extended a narrow 10-9 first-quarter advantage to 20-15 at the half before Police clawed its way back to 24-25 at the end of third, only to falter again in the final period.
Giselle Hobson-Richards (16 of 27) and Giselle Navarro (12 from 20) got Police goals.
Today is a rest day while matches in the Championship and Premier Divisions will jump off tomorrow from 1 pm.
In the Championship Division, Bermudez meets Defence Force from 1 pm followed by last year's runner-up Fire Service against UWI, while defending champion Police tackles 2012 second runner-up Jabloteh.
UTT, winners of the opening day knockout tourney, on Saturday begins defence of its premiership crown against last year's second place finisher Police from 6 pm with former winners Fire Service and Defence Force squaring off at 4.45 pm.
