Goalshoot Daystar Swift had a match high 27 goals from 38 attempts as University of Trinidad & Tobago (UTT) began defence of its Premier Division title in the 23rd season of the Courts All Sectors Netball League (ASNL) with a three-goal win over Police at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Orange Grove Road, Tacarigua, on Saturday.
In addition to Swift, Jillisa Allan added a valuable ten goals from 18 attempts as UTT held off Police 37-34 after securing leads at the end of the first three quarters, 9-6, 21-15 and 29-26.
For Police, national goal attack and former Fire Service player Joelisa Cooper had a team high 21 goals from 26 attempts while the experienced Gurshier Grant chipped in with 13 from 16, but it was not enough to deny the champions a winning start to the 2013 campaign to add to their opening day knockout tourney triumph.
However, it was national goal shoot and former England-based Anastacia Wilson who stole the spotlight on the opening day of top flight matches as she all most single-handedly defeated Fire Service.Wilson sank 45 of 61 attempts and Kimarie James added one from three to guide Defence Force past its bitter rival 46-43 after trailing 33-34 to start the final quarter.
