The racing fraternity was dealt a severe blow yesterday, when thrice Horse of The Year, Bruceontheloose died at Santa Rosa Park. The Jamaican bred champion died from colic and was buried at Santa Rosa Park, Arima. Over the last two decades, there has not been a racehorse which captured the imagination and generated such public interest as the seven-year-old grey. Since the days of the great creoles Jetsam, Airofaith, Mentone no horse has generated such interest.
The Tres Amigos owned Bruceontheloose was held in the highest regards from turfites and has been compared to many greats, the like True Gold, Aurelian, Young Turnabout, Ferry Boat, Aquarius, Royal Colours, Windy Hill, Conquest, Clown Prince, Sians Gold, Sugar Mike and Top of the Class. Bruce finished unplaced in his final start Boxing Day on Boxing Day where he attempted to win the Gold Cup for a second time. Champion trainer John O'Brien who trained Bruceontheloose could not be contacted as he was abroad. Bruceontheloose has rewritten the history books on many occasions and will be missed..
Bruceontheloose arrived in Trinidad in July, 2009, with the Curriculum Vitae (CV) which made him the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of racing in the South Caribbean. "Bolt' as Bruceonetheloose is known, annihilated the opposition in two legs of the Jamaica Triple Crown, before enduring a rough passage in the Jamaica Derby, losing by a short-head. To date Bruceontheloose has won 22 races from 29 starts locally and has amassed more than $3 million in earnings.
A victory in the Grade One–Republic Bank Gold Cup over 2,000 metres on the main track at Santa Rosa Park, could see him become the greatest horse in the history of local racing. Interestingly, over the past 11 months, Bruceontheloose carried all before except for blotting his copy-book in the President's Cup when beaten by Strikes Not Spares and Mobthewarrior. Apart from that blemish he has won on five occasions in 2012. Bruceontheloose has marched triumphantly to victory in the Caribbean Champion Stakes and should prevail as the 2012 Horse Of The Year.
