Reigning Carifta and CAC Junior discus champion Kenejah Williams scored a throw double at the First NAAA Development Meet at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, on the weekend.
Williams captured the boys' under-20 shot put and discus events. In the shot put, the Scarborough Secondary/Falcons athlete took the top spot with a distance of 15.74m to finish ahead of Stephan Thomas (Air Bon Sonics), 10.40, and Toco TAFAC's Machel Charles, 10.18. Williams landed the discus with a 47.34m effort beating out Micah McNish (GC Striders) 44.68.
Carifta girls under-17 shot put reigning champion and record holder Chelsea James secured a similar double leading the way in the girls under-17 shot put and discus. James got the iron ball out to 14.18m to win the shot put ahead of Akidah Briggs (Toco Titans), 11.69, and Tenneil Scott (Cougars), 7.44. The Signal Hill Secondary/Falcons thrower captured the discus with a toss of 32.29. James also won the women's open event with a distance of 12.25, ahead of the Toco TAFAC duo of Cherisse Murray (12.04) and Portious Warren (11.90). Zakiya Waldron of Bishop Anstey was also double winner leaping to victory in the girls under-17 high jump (1.45) and long jump (4.20).
Reigning World Masters Indoor double champion Gwendolyn Smith defeated her younger rivals in the women's javelin with a best throw of 36.09. Smith (Petrotrin P/Seco) was also second in the discus (24.61) behind Sharisse Downey (Burnley) (36.18) and was fourth in the shot put (11.70).
Kevin Roberts, Edson Moses, Shaunna Downey and Ayana Glasgow were impressive winners in their events.
Roberts, the 2012 CAC Junior Boys under-15 octathlon winner, landed the boys under-20 long jump with a distance of 6.80 ahead of Nicholon Caesar (Zenith) 6.33. Seon Michael Stafford (Toco TAFAC) won the men's event with a distance of 6.56. Moses (Falcons) was the winner in the boys under-17 high jump (1.86) while Downey (Burnley) took the girl's under-20 discus (40.62). Glasgow (Toco TAFAC) was victorious in the high jump in the abandoned women's pentathlon with a leap of 1.65.
The Second NAAA Development Meet is scheduled for the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Saturday 18 January from 10:00 am.
