Lendore takes Texas 400m opener

Deon Lendore capped off an impressive run for T&T quarter milers on the weekend as he won the men’s 400m at the Texas A&M Triangular Indoor Meet on his home track in College Station, Texas on Saturday. 

On Friday, Lendore’s Olympic 4x400m bronze relay teammates Lalonde Gordon and Jarrin Solomon recorded wins in the 200m and 600m respectively in separate meets. in Texas, Lendore secured the victory in his first 400m race for the season in an impressive time of 45.91, a meet record and a world leading time. Lendore took an early lead to head the field at the 200m mark and pulled away on the final stretch, improving on the previous meet best of 46.03 set by Bahamian Demetrius Pinder in 2010. 

Lendore also missed the national mark of 45.90 set Kerron Clement in 2004.

The 20-year-old returned to help Texas A&M to victory in the men’s 4x400m in 3:07.21, just off the 3:06.25 set by the same team one week earlier. School-mate Wayne Davis finished third in the men’s 60m hurdles in 8.00. 

Davis was beaten by Caleb Cross (Arkansas/USA) 7.89 and Joshua Thompson (LSU/USA) 7.95. Davis holds the national indoor 60m hurdles (7.70) and outdoor 110m hurdles (13.37) records and was a semifinalist at the London Olympics. 

Another Texas A&M student Janiel Bellille missed out on a top three finish in the women’s 400m taking the fourth spot in 54.92. The 2008 World Junior 400m hurdles silver medallist is competing in her first season for Texas A&M after her successful stint at South Plains Junior College. LSU’s Shermund Allsop was seventh in the men’s 200m (21.63) and 12th in the 60m (7.02).

At the Iowa State Open in Ames, Iowa on Friday and Saturday, Dan-Neil Telesford (Iowa Central) was fourth in the men’s 200m (21.82) and 23rd in the men’s 600 yards (1:15.03).
