Deyal slams 91 in season opener

Mark Deyal opened the 2013 local cricket season in fine style hammering an imperious 91 but his efforts failed to save his club Caldrac from defeat at the hands of Bamboo in their opening match of the National League 50 overs tournament at Bamboo Number Two.
Deyal, the son of former national player Deonarine Deyal, struck three sixes and four fours to take Caldrac to 185 all out from 50 overs. Keon Isaac bowling for Bamboo created many problems for Caldrac and finished with 3/24.
Bamboo in reply got home in a thriller, reaching 189 for eight off 46.1 overs with Terrence Hinds bringing the crowd to their feet with a hurricane 67. His innings included five sixes and four fours. Rishard Harris support well with 36. Bamboo got the two-wicket victory despite the best efforts of John Ross-Jaggessar 4/49 and Dane Teelucksingh 3/35.
At Diamond Village, the F&E Diamond United cricket club making their debut in the top flight, went under to defending champions Queen’s Park by 126 runs. QPCC captain Justin Guillen kept up his great run of form striking 65 to lead the Parkites to 247 for eight off their 50 overs.
Akiel Hosein batted well in tandem with him and struck 45. The veteran Anand Ajodha was the best bowler for Diamond taking 2/43. The home team in reply was bowled out for 121 off 42 overs with Nigel Gayahsingh scoring 36. Hosein returned with the ball to take 2/17, while Daron Cruickshank grabbed 3/29, Taitt Pierre 2/14 and Amit Jaggernauth 2/24.
At Syne Village in Penal, national captain Denesh Ramdin making his debut for PowerGen cricket club, struck a half century to lead them to a six-wicket victory over Alescon Comets. Comets batting first made 131 all out with national all rounder Imran Khan getting 34. Ramdin then struck 51 off 38 balls and Nicholas Sookdeosingh got 42 in a partnership of 81 runs, as PowerGen replied with 137/4 off 22.2 overs.
Across at Wilson Road, First Citizens Clarke Road United made a great start to the season with victory over Moosai Sports. Sean Siloch struck an entertaining 47 to take Clarke Road to 209 all out. The veteran West Indies fast bowler Mervyn Dillon was in great form taking 2/20.
Moosai Sports with national opener William Perkins in the line-up then fell for 157 off 43.5 overs. Pacer Navin Stewart continued to show his credentials as an all rounder by striking 40 but it was not enough. The evergreen Mukesh Persad was the man doing the damage with 3/16, while Sanjeev Gooljar took 3/38.
The clash between W-Connection and Merryboys did not come off, as W-Connection is now seeking legal redress for a decision made by the national disciplinary committee concerning an abandoned match last season against Comets.
At the Aranguez Savannah, Esmeralda came away with a narrow eight-run victory. Teshawn Castro scored 55 as Esmeralda made 121 all out batting first. Aranguez would have fancied their chances of getting this score, however left arm orthodox spinner Rishi Jaipaul had other ideas. He spun out 5/9 off nine overs.
