Jahmia Harley of Tidal Wave Aquatics re-established the first national record of the year when she swam to a one-minute and 19.59-second (1:19.59) finish in the 100 metres backstroke (9-10 age division) at the Centre of Excellence Sea Hawks' annual New Year Splash, staged recently at Marlins Swim Pool, Westmoorings.
Harley erased the 2012 record time set by Vrisnelit Faure (1:21.09), as she went on to capture the overall trophy in the nine-ten age group.
At the end of the meet, Titans Swim club emerged victor among 12 clubs.
This was the fourth edition of the New Year Splash, but for the first time it was held at Marlins. The change was made following the decision of the Amateur Swimming Association of T&T (ASATT) to consider only long course times (times achieved in a 50m pool) for national team selection for the 2013 Carita and CCCAN Games.
Titans amassed 1,383 points to successfully defend its 2012 title. Titans also went away with the lion's share of individual trophies (23) and five Fina point trophies. Second place went to Tidal Wave Aquatics with 1,251 points with 2010 and 2011 champion Blue Dolphins placing third with 522 points. The top three clubs received trophies. Atlantis Aquatics (521) and Silver Sharks (429) rounded off the top five clubs.
For high point trophies, swimmers were scored via the Fina point system. The Fina points table allows comparisons of results among different events. The Fina points table assigns point values to swimming performances, more points for world class performances typically 1000 or more and less points for slower performances.
The top eight swimmers in the ten-and-under, as well as the 11-12 and 13-14 divisions were awarded trophies, while the top three in the eight-and-under, 1517 and 18-and-over age groups were also awarded. Swimmers, who did not receive trophies in the 15-17 and 18-and-over age groups, but were ranked in the top ten in 15-and-over also received awards. The highest Fina point swim in each age-group was also awarded.
