Cocorite advance in Hoop of Life action
All four home teams in Wednesday night’s match-ups, Cocorite, Caledonia, Marabella and Valencia, emerged victorious when competition in the sudden-death knockout round in the Hoop of Life Community Basketball League continued at venues nationwide on Wednesday.
The most competitive match took place in west Trinidad where Cocorite hosted San Juan at Waterhole Basketball Court, with the former taking a slim 76-73 victory. It was a clash of two second-placed teams and after the first ten minutes of play it was the visitors who were in control 18-10, a lead they maintained up until half-time (42-33).
During the interval, the home team fans called on their players to play with some pride.
As fate would have it, Cocorite, led by their inspirational point guard Gerard Toney, jumped off the third quarter with a 12-4 run which saw them outscore the visitors 28-11 for a 61-53 lead.
But it was not until the three-minute mark that Cocorite went ahead 67-68 on a Toney three-point throw, and held on for victory. Toney, who limped for much of the fourth quarter after suffering a right leg injury, ended with 18 points, while his brother Kerron Williams, a power forward, scored 23 points.
As a result, Cocorite will head to Tobago to face Moriah on Saturday.
For San Juan, centre Aaron Charles led the fight with 23 points, followed by guard Dillon Howell with 16. San Juan lost one of its key players, forward Shorn Solomon, before the end of the first half. He, however, aided with 12 points.
There were also wins for Caledonia, which defeated Longdenville 86-47 at Paradise Heights, Morvant. Caledonia will journey to Rio Claro tonight.
Marabella outclassed Mason Hall 145-35 at Bayshore, Marabella, to set up a date with Siparia tonight, while Valencia dropped Palo Seco 103-68 at home.
Valencia will now travel to Tobago for a date with Canaan-Bon Accord.
