T&T's 12-member floor hockey delegation finished a successful campaign at the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Korea, yesterday, with a bronze medal haul, after concluding the schedule with a 6-1 loss to Hungary in the semifinal, at the Gangneung Sports Centre.
Despite several opportunities being created from the counter attack, the Special Olympics T&T (SOTT) team was only able to convert one of the chances, through a Devan Mahadeo finish. Mahadeo ended a combined effort with the help of Daniel Ramphal, to get the lone goal against Hungary, the same team SOTT lost to (7-0) in the preliminary stage.
T&T also suffered a loss in the preliminary stage to Jamaica, which advanced to the final as with Hungary. The title match was played after midnight this morning. SOTT, however, claimed a big win (7-1) at the expense of the USA.
Despite the losses in the competition, coach Clayton Williams stated that SOTT was able to achieve Division One status. He added that the younger players have begun to provide a foundation to build upon in the future.
SOTT was presented with the bronze by a special athlete and 'global messenger' Deon Namiseb in an awards ceremony shortly after the match.
The Special Olympics World Winter Games closes today, and the SOTT Delegation will return home on Friday.
