Jaggie spins out Canadians

While Sunil Narine has caught the imagination of the cricketing public over the past two years, fellow off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth is still making a case to be in the limelight as he continued his great form yesterday by snaring six wickets to bowl T&T to a comprehensive innings and 130-run victory over Canada at the National Cricket Centre (NCC) in Couva.

Starting the third and final day on 94 for four, the Canadians were bowled out for 191 by the T&T spinners who collected all ten second innings wickets. When Jaggernauth ended the innings at 11.46 am, his figures read 6/84 and he was able to get T&T to victory before the rain started to fall.

When the Canadians resumed on their bedtime score, they would have hoped to at least bat out the first session without much damage. However, early in the play the destruction started as Jaggernauth sent back Nitish Kumar for six. Twenty runs later he accounted for Rizwan Cheema and at 126 for six the end was near, or at least the local boys would have thought so.

The Canadian tail started to wag and in the end they were able to get up to 191. Tariq Hamza 31 and Junaid Siddiqui 23 added 35 runs for the seventh wicket that threatened to take the game into the rain but left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh accounted for both before Jaggernauth wrapped up the innings.

Kantasingh finished with three for 28, while leg-spinner Imran Khan took the other wicket to fall. Manager of the team Omar Khan was very pleased with the outcome of the match. “We are happy with the showing by the boys. They are indicating that they understand what it takes to get good results in first class matches and we are happy about that. We had three men scoring hundreds and occupying the crease for long periods and this kind of application is what we need from them.

Khan also praised the efforts of the bowlers. “Our bowlers stuck well to the task, and in the end they would have gotten a good work out. Jaggie is showing his class still and he will be required to perform similarly when the regional tournament begins.”

T&T and Canada will go at it again this evening, when they meet in a T20 match at Guaracara Park from 6 pm. This will be followed by another game at 6 pm tomorrow at the same venue.
