6 teams already into 50 overs quarters

The National league 50 overs tournament enters its final preliminary round today and already six teams are assured of going through to tomorrow’s quarter-finals. The four teams from Group B that are currently in positions one to four on the standings after round four cannot be surpassed. They are PowerGen who has 12 points, Merryboys who have nine, Bamboo on seven and Alescon Comets on five. Caldrac Club who are winless in the tournament to date cannot surpass any of these teams, while W-Connection has not played a game all season and have lost all matches by default.
Today again they will not play and hence Alecon Comets will be gifted with three points to end the campaign on eight points. Bamboo Sports are due to play Merry Boys and who ever wins this game will finish second in the group because Merry Boys go into the round in second spot on nine points and Bamboo has seven. A win for Bamboo will put them ahead of Merry Boys. However, if Merry Boys win they will go to 12 points and should Caldrac upset PowerGen, then run rate will be used to decide the winner of the group.
Group A is a bit more interesting as Queen’s Park and Clarke Road are through to the quarters and the battle for the final two spots is down to Moosai, Esmeralda and Diamond. Newcomers Diamond will host last place HKL Aranjuez SC at Kennedy Park and they will begin as slight favourites to win the match, with their Guyanese import Jonathan Foo in prime form. If Diamond wins the match, then they go to six points. The winners of the Moosai Sports versus Esmeralda game will go through as both teams are on six points and the winner will move on to nine. This would leave the loser on six and if Diamond wins, then run rate will come into play to decide the last team to come out of the group.
Leaders Queen’s Park will leave all the carnival festivities in Port-of-Spain and head to rural Clarke Road for a top of the table clash. If Queen’s Park wins then they play the fourth place team from Group B in the quarters tomorrow. If Clarke Road wins then run rate will decide the group winners. All matches start at 10 am.
