Brooks makes Big Ten Indoor track athlete of the week
Alena Brooks (Minnesota University) was named the Big Ten Conference Indoor Track athlete of the week after placing second in the women’s 800m event at the Meyo Invitational in Idaho on February 2 setting a personal best time of 2:06.24.
The time pushed the Diego Martin Government Secondary graduate to number two on Minnesota’s all time performers list. Her time also put the Memphis Pioneer runner into first place in the Big Ten and sixth in the NCAA.
The 2010 World Junior 800m semifinalist also led Minnesota to victory in the distance medley relay. The multiple Carifta medallist became the first student from her university to capture an Indoor Athlete of the Week honour since February 2011.
Brooks is the third T&T athlete to cop an athlete-of-the-week honour during the 2013 season, following in the footsteps of Emmanuel Stewart (Morgan State) and Deandra Daniel (Coppin State) who were named as top performers in January. Brook is pursuing a degree in Kinesiology at Minnesota.
