Caldrac upsets PowerGen in National league
Newcomers Caldrac Sports Club were left a very happy bunch yesterday as they defeated powerhouse PowerGen for their most famous victory in the club’s history. Batting first at Syne Village, PowerGen without their star players, who were on national duty, struggled to 138 all out off 44.2 overs. Leading the way were Akeil Cooper 34 and Gregory Mahabir 29. Christopher Vincent 3/27, Miguel Mahabir 2/20, Omesh Ramoutar 2/4 and Valmiki Maharaj all combined to keep PowerGen under wraps.
Brent Lezama with an unbeaten 48 and Franklyn Rouse with 33, then ensured Caldrac reached their victory target for the loss off six wickets with five in hand and 11 balls to spare. Despite the loss, PowerGen still finished as Group B winners and will meet Esmeralda in the quarterfinals today at Syne Village, Penal. In other Group B results, Merryboys finished strongly to end with the same number of points as PowerGen but finished second on net run rate. Playing against Bamboo Sports, the Patna Boys bowled them out for 171 in 45.4 overs with Emile Rajah 3/45 and Alcindo Holder 2/10 the main bowlers.
Holder then returned with the bat to strike an unbeaten 53 and opener Mario Belcon carved 79, as Merryboys reached 172 for three in reply to take a seven-wicket win. In Group A, Queen’s Park finished with a perfect record, as they hammered Clarke Road by 53 at the Wilson Road Recreation Ground in Penal. Jonathan Augustus followed up his century in the second round with a robust 85, as the Parkites made 255 for nine off their 50 overs. Clarke Road in reply was restricted to 202 all out in reply.
