Reyare Thomas sped to her second sprint double of the season winning the women's 60m and 200m dashes at the Don Kirby Open in Alburquerque, New Mexico on Saturday. The Abilene Christian student's double triumph was more rewarding as she established new personal best times in both events.
Thomas won the 60m final in 7.45 seconds after equalling her previous best time of 7.55 in clocking the fourth fastest time in the heats. The 25-year-old Chaguanas resident then took the 200m in 23.88, shattering her previous best of 24.16 which was set at the New Mexico Invitational when she landed her first sprint double for season on January 25 and 26.
Thomas was denied a third win when she and her Abilene Christian relay team finished second in 3:52.35 in the 4x400m race. Thomas ran the lead-off leg for T&T's women's 4x100m team which finished seventh in the 2009 World Championships final in Berlin, Germany and was also a reserve at the 2011 World Championships team in Daegu, South Korea and the 2012 London Olympics.
Another Abilene Christian student Osei Alleyne-Forte was part of his school's victorious men's 4x400m squad which clocked 3:20.09. Alleyne-Forte was 29th in the 200m (22.72).
Osei's elder brother Ade, Wayne Davis II, Janiel Bellille, Deon Lendore, Hileen James and Deborah John all recorded victories on the weekend.
At the Texas A&M Invite in College Station Texas, Ade copped the men's 400m Olympic Development event in 47.16. The win is the first for the year for the London Olympic men's 4x400m bronze medallist.
In his opening race at the Texas A&M Challenge, the St Stephen College graduate was third in a new personal best of 46.88. Davis II (Texas A&M) landed the men's 60m hurdles final in 7.86. In the heats earlier, the London Olympic 110m hurdles semifinalist clocked the fastest time of 7.89.
Compatriot and Texas A&M team-mate Bellille ensured another victory for the home team.
The 2008 World Junior 400m hurdles silver medallist was the quickest in the women's 400m field in 54.65 while yet another Texas A&M athlete, Lendore, helped his school's 4x400m to victory in 3:07.77.
At the Don Hal-VT Elite Meet in Blackburg, Virginia, James captured the women's shot put in 16.85. The former Carifta champion was short of her personal best of 16.80 set in finishing fourth at the Razorback Invitational last month.
Florida's Jovon Toppin was second in the 400m (48.75) and fourth in the 200m(22.06). John (North Dakota) secured the women's 60m hurdles title clocking 8.59 in the final at the Bison Open on her home track in Fargo, North Dakota. In the preliminaries, John was the fastest in the field in 8.65.
