Salaries owed to players, officials and management of the Hoop of Life Community Basketball, were, in part, released yesterday, following logistical problems encountered by management.
Within the next week, payments of the monthly stipends, which are valued at $1,000 per player, are expected to be paid in full since the backlog, which began in December.
This was according to the league's commissioner, Keith Clement.
Speaking to the Trinidad Guardian, Clement assured that salaries were being released yesterday. Funding for the crime-prevention initiative is being carried by the Ministry of National Security, which launched the programme back in October, last year.
Over 1,000 players, managers, coaches, administrators and other officials are among those who are set to receive stipends. This was the cause of backlog, according to Clement, who said that the issues were logistical. Salaries were last issued in December.
"There is a process and, it's over 700 players we have to issue salaries for," said Clement.
He added: "This is the inaugural programme. We are going to stumble upon issues. We expect that the fluency of the programme will improve over time."The players, according to Clement, will be paid in accordance to their respective sectors.
