Leah Alcala and Trevine Sellier defied the odds yesterday, as the pair advanced to the ladies doubles final of the BGT&T Tranquillity Open Tennis Tournament, with a stunning three-set victory over the top-seeded and highly-favoured pair of Breana Stampfli and Donna Chin Lee.
The match, along with the two men's, women's, and mixed doubles semifinal matches were completed at the Tranquillity Tennis Courts, Woodbrook.
Stampfli and Chin Lee began with a flawless 6-0 first set win. However, after a much more competitive second set, which finished 6-4 in favour of Alcala and Sellier, the match swung in favour of the latter pair, which set alight the tournament with a most improbable comeback.
As a result, Alcala and Sellier booked a place in tomorrow's title match, where they will meet Christine Alcazar and Cindy Kabli, who paired up in a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Sarah Escalante and Bridgette Garcia.
In the two men's doubles semifinal matches, Yohansey Williams and Vaughn Wilson easily disposed of Nabeel Mohammed and Aaron Soo Ping Chow 6-0, 6-2. The other match saw Dunstan Denoon and Javier Lewis drop Jelani Davidson and Elan Murray-Mendez 5-7, 7-5 (10-3).
The two mixed doubles semifinal matches were completed after press time last evening. Only one match will be played today, when the mixed doubles final gets underway at 4 pm at the same venue.
Tomorrow will see the final of the women's doubles, from 3.30 pm, followed by the men's doubles.
Singles action will commence on Sunday.
