Reigning Carifta champions Mark London and Chelsea James and jumper Chad Richards were among the outstanding performers on the second and final day of action at the 2013 Carifta trials at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, yesterday.
London captured the boys under 20 800m in 1:53.03, getting past the 1:54.00 standard.
He finished ahead of Barbadian Jerrad Mason (1:53.97) and Kasique Oliver of St Vincent and the Grenadines.
The Zenith star is expected to be on the national contingent for this year's Carifta Games in the Bahamas from March 29 to April 1 where he will defend his two-lap title which he won in Bermuda last year. On Saturday's first day, London captured the 1500m in a qualifying run of 4:00:38 (4:10.00).
James secured the girls under 17 discus with a personal best effort of 39.16. Last year's Carifta girls under 17 shot put winner was tested by Shaian Charles of D'Abadie Progressive who led the competition until James' winning effort in the fifth round. Charles finished second with 48.73 as the pair dominated the competition and both were over the 32.00 standard. All of James' five legal throws were over the mark while Charles had four efforts bettering the qualifying barrier.
On Saturday James also qualified in the shot put event. Richards of Oasics took home the boys under 17 triple jump with a last round leap of 14.37. On Saturday he captured the long jump with a distance of 6.98 ( 6.50 standard).
Olympic Machel Cedenio, Akeem Marshall and Ruebin Walters were also double qualifiers. Cedenio (Simplex) was second in the men's 200m finals in 21.32 behind Jereem Richards (Abilene Wildcat) 20.95. Last year's Carifta boys under 17 champ Jonathan Farinha had to settle for third in 21.58.
In the semifinals earlier in the day Cedenio topped the field with a personal best time of 21.15 ahead of Farinha (21.24). The Carifta standard for the event is 21.40.
On day one, Cedenio landed the boys under 20 400m in 46.42 (standard 47.80). Marshall (Toco Titans) secured the boys open 5000m in 16:03.14, almost 17 seconds inside the 16:20.00 standard. Marshall made the mark for the boys under 20 1500m on Saturday finishing second to London in 4:05.10.
Walters (Memphis) was second in the boys under 20 400m hurdles in 52.30 as Barbadian Commonwealth Youth Games bronze medallist Kion Joseph was first to the line in 51.82. Walters was under the 54.00 standard also qualified in the 110m hurdles on Saturday.
There were three qualifiers in the boys under 20 shot put as Hezekiel Romeo of Rebirth won with 16.44 from Kenejah Williams (Tobago Falcons) 16.10 and Shervornne Worrel (UTT) 15.60 got over the 15.00 mark.
The top two surpassed the standard with every legal throw. Omari Benoit and his Tobago Falcons club mate Edson Moses met the 1.85 standard in the boys under 17 high jump. Benoit won with 1.90 ahead of Moses (1.85).
Kayelle Clarke dipped the 24.00 mark for the girls under 20 200m on two occasions. The Petrotrin Pointe-a-Pierre sprinter sped to 23.95 in the semis before capturing the finals in 23.75, both personal best times. Aaliyah Telesford (Pt. Fortin New Jets) was second in the finals in 23.96 to also qualify.
Other qualifiers were Shakeil Waithe (Zenith) boys under 20 javelin-60.47( standard-54.00), Alisha St. Louis (D'Abadie Progressive) girls under 17 long jump-5.44 (5.40), Ian West (Pt. Fortin New Jets) boys under 17 javelin 50.22 (48.00).
Thirty four (34) athletes attained qualifying standards on the two days of competition.
