Michael Hospedales netted a second-half double to lead Malabar FC to a 6-1 mauling of Enterprise Youths on Match Day Two of 2013 blink/bmobile National Super League Champions of Champions qualifiers at the University of T&T Ground, O'Meara Road, Arima on Sunday night.
Going into the encounter, both Malabar and Enterprise were level on three points after opening round come-from-behind 2-1 victories over Point Fortin Civic Centre and St Francois Nationals respectively.
Following an evenly matched first 45 minutes, Malabar took a 1-0 within a minute of the restart via Hospedales and on the hour mark he added another for a 2-0 lead.
With 12 minutes left in the match Shandel Samuel extended Malabar's advantage to 3-0 and within two minutes it was 4-0 thanks to a strike from Kevon Cornwall to put the contest to rest.
Stephen Whiteman then got a consolation for Enterprise with five minutes left in the match and there was still time for Norrel George to get another for Malabar in the 87th minute to secure a second straight win and level at the top of the six-team table with Guaya United which whipped cellar-placed Civic Centre, 5-1 in the day's early match at Guayaguayare Recreation Ground led by a Carlon Hughes hat-trick,
Hughes got his goals as early as the third, 29th and 54th minutes to carry his tally to four in two matches while Ryan Stewart (67th) and Earlon Thomas (78th) added one each.
Matthew Bartholomew, a former national youth team-mate of Hughes and Stewart had drawn Civic Centre level in the 20th minute.
Over at the Plymouth Recreation Ground, home side, Bethel United overcame an early setback to defeat St Francois Nationals, 3-1 for its first win.
For the second straight match, St Francois went ahead to long-serving member Lorne Joseph before Nicholas Baldwin got Bethel level in the 39th, after which Keron Williams (78th) and Jeremy Toby, a minute from full-time got second-half strikes.
Matches will continue on Sunday, with Guaya hosting Malabar from 3.30pm; St Francois against Civic Centre at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Training Field, Mucurapo from 4pm and Bethel at home to Enterprise, one hour later.
At the end of the round-robin series on March 24, the top two teams will gain promotion to the 2013 Super League competition.
