Alie heeds TSTT call in Retro Division netball
Debra Alie was near perfect in front of goal as TSTT claimed the Retro Division title in the Courts All Sectors Netball League with its sixth win from as many matches, defeating Les Enfants 34-18 at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Tacarigua, on Monday night.
Going into the contest, TSTT knew a win would cement the league crown and led by goal attack Alie and goal shoot Olivia Le Platte dominated from start to finish 13-3, 20-6 and 26-11 at the end of the first three quarters before easing up a bit in the final period.
Alie ended with 25 goals from 33 attempts and Le Platte chipped in with nine from 16 attempts as the TSTT women coasted to the easy win to carry their points tally to an unassailable maximum 12 points from six matches, six clear of second-placed Harlem with two matches left for both teams.
For Les Enfants, Michelle Boyce led with 10 goals from 16 attempts, while Joanne Payne got six from 15, and Joseine Francois, two from four. In the night’s second Retro encounter, CCS squashed any hopes Harlem had to claiming the crown with a tense 30-23 victory led by Julia Britto’s 17 goals from 26 attempts, and Sherry Thomas with 13 from 18.
Antoinette Jackson and Jill Humphrey got 13 from 19 and 10 from 14 for Harlem, which suffered its third loss from six outings, while CCS joined Les Enfants on four points but from a match more.
With the title win, TSTT joined University of T&T (UTT), winners of the Premiership Division and Alternative Division as league champions so far in the 2013 season. Meanwhile, title race in the Championship Division will go down to the final round of matches after front runners Bermudez had its title celebrations put on hold by last year’s winners Police, which also stayed alive with the 51-49 win.
Bermudez, which went into the match with a three point lead over Fire Service and Police, had a chance to seal the title with a draw or win over the law-women. However, after leading 13-8 at the end of the first quarter, Bermudez saw its lead cancel out at the half (23-23) before Police eked out a two-goal victory.
The heroine for Police, which now trails Bermudez by a point, both with a match left to play, was goalshoot Patrice Goring, who sank 38 of 50 attempts, Jenice Mc Intosh with 11 from 18, and Beverly Hernandez, who added two from four attempts.
Kathy James was the main scorer for Bermudez, converting 34 of 43 attempts, and Joycelyn Marcelle helped herself to 15 from 24, but it was not enough to secure the crown. Despite the loss, Bermudez still head the table with 14 points from nine matches, while Police is next, a point behind. In the final round, Bermudez meets UWI on Monday and can claim the title ahead of Police’s match versus Defence Force, a day later.
