T&T's women's hockey team remained winless and at the bottom of the six-team table with host Brazil, after a second straight loss in the second round qualifiers of the FIH World Hockey League at the Deodoro Field Hockey Centre, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, yesterday.
Following a 7-0 drubbing by world 19th-ranked Scotland on Monday, the "Calypso Stickwomen," ranked 27th in the world were hopeful of a much improved performance against their Pan American rivals.
However, 18th-ranked Chile, 2-0 winners over Uruguay in its opener, was in no mood to play second fiddle and took the lead through Carolina Garcia after only three minutes while Mariana Lagos doubled its advantage in the 16th for a 2-0 lead while Javiera Vilagra made it 3-0 six minutes before the interval.
Six minutes into the second half, Vilagra got her second of the match as the South Americans put the match beyond doubt before Paula Infante added two late items in the 67th and 68th to complete a commanding 6-0 triumph.
With the win, Chile joined USA and Scotland at the top of the standings with six points each after two matches, while Uruguay, Brazil and T&T remained without a point.
In the day's other match, USA downed Uruguay 3-0, while Scotland continued its free scoring, blitzing Brazil 7-0.
Today, the Alanna Lewis-captained "Calypso Stickwomen" will have revenge on their minds when they meet Uruguay from 2.30 pm.
It will be the second meeting between the two countries in five months, after Uruguay won their November 12, 2012 Round One qualifying meeting in T&T, 2-0 enroute to finishing second behind unbeaten Canada while the locals were third with three wins and two defeats.
Chile and Brazil will flick off the day's action from 8 am followed by Scotland and USA, two hours later, in a key contest which could go a long way in determining top spot.
At the end of the six-team round-robin series on Sunday, the two highest finishers will secure places in round three.
