Captain Alanna Lewis was among the scorers as this country's senior women's hockey team whipped host Brazil 3-1 to end a run of losses, three, in the six-team Second Round qualifiers of the FIH World Hockey League when they battle host Brazil at the Deodoro Field Hockey Centre, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, yesterday.
Both the "Calypso Stickwomen," ranked 27th in the world and Brazil entered the match without a point and in the 15th minute Lewis fired T&T ahead, while seven minutes later, Blair Wynne, the scorer of T&T's lone goal in a 6-1 loss to Uruguay, made it 2-0 for a half-time score.
On the resumption, the Brazilians took the match to T&T and pulled within one goal when captain Patricia Boos scored in the 47th minute, however, that was as close as it came as Krizia Layne added a third for T&T on the stroke of full-time to seal her team's first win to move off the foot of the table.
Today, T&T will conclude its participation at the tournament with an 8 pm meeting with USA, which has ten points after beating Chile 2-1 in a close encounter.Emily Wold (40th) and Melissa Gonzalez (65th) handed the Americans a 2-0 lead before Camilla Caram got a 68th-minute consolation for Chile, as it dropped its first points in four matches.
In yesterday's late match, Uruguay (three points) came up against Scotland (eight points) ahead of today's final set of matches which also includes Chile against Scotland at 10 am, followed by Uruguay and Brazil at 12 pm.
At the end of the six-team round-robin series on Sunday, the two highest finishers will secure places in round three.
