Morain cops Cliff Bertrand award
Moriba Morain won the Cliff Bertrand award for the most outstanding local 200 metre runner at this year's Southern Games at Guaracara Park in Pointe-a-Pierre on the weekend.
The Simplex sprinter was adjudged the winner of the accolade after he retained the men's 200m event in 21.40. Morain collected the trophy from Dr Bertrand, who is a former T&T Olympian. He ran 1964 Olympics in Tokyo.
Double sprint champions Jenea Spinks (Neon Trackers) and Adel Colthrust (Southern Athletics) received special awards after they landed the 100m and 200m events in the Under-15 girls and boys age groups, respectively.
Jonathan Farinha, the winner of last year's award, took the boys U-20 half lap in 21.96. Maresa Ryan (Petrotrin Palo Seco) copped the women's high jump with leap of 1.65, to improve on her runner-up finish in 2012.
Jereem Richards anchored Abilene Wildcats to victory in the men's 4x400m in 3:14.74. Olympic 400m hurdles finalist Jehue Gordon ran a storming last leg to ensure Memphis Pioneers got the silver (3:18.27) ahead of the Defence Force (3:18.27). Gordon ran down Darmunt David on the final stretch and edged him on the line.
Petrotrin Pointe-A-Pierre retained the boys U-20 4x400m (3:24.75) after a strong final leg run by Carifta representative Theon Lewis. Neon Trackers and Memphis followed behind. Neon Trackers ladies held on to the Women's 4x400m (3:51.88) running away respectively, from Memphis Pioneers and Abilene Wildcats. (CC)
