Honore’s Benfica extends v-ball lead

T&T’s Marc-Anthony Honore and his SL Benfica club widened its lead at the top of the six-team Championship play-offs race in the Portugal Volleyball Federation League after a four-set win in their top-of-the-table clash with SC Espinho on Saturday.

 

The lanky Honore, playing the centre position, helped guide his team to a 25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 25-19 win, their first over SC Espinho in three league meetings for the 2012/2013 campaign.

 

With the win, SL Benfica, three-time Portugal A-1 champions and reigning 14-time Portuguese Cup winners, pushed its points tally to 29 points from six matches, four more than SC Espinho with four matches left to play for each club.

 

In the two other matches on the weekend, AJF Bastardo brushed aside Vitoria 25-19, 25-17, 25-15 to stay third with 24 points while Castelo da Maia rallied past Esmiroz 25-18, 15-25, 25-22, 25-18 jump to fourth spot with 15 points, one ahead of Vitoria.

 

When matches resume on Saturday, March 30, Benfica will face Castelo da Maia, Vitoria is at home to SC Espinho and AJF Bastardo entertains Esmiroz.
