The 85-year-old, nine-hole course operated by the Brechin Castle Golf Club is now threatened with closure, according to the club's vice president Bill Ramrattan, who accused the Sport Company of T&T (SporTT) of giving the club "a hard time."
Speaking with the media on Wednesday, Ramrattan claimed employees of SporTT had locked off the club's water supply for the grass, earlier this week. He said the latest fiasco may affect the future of golf in Central if it is not rectified soon.
Ramrattan said instructions were given by an official of Caroni (1975) Ltd to shut the supply, despite the institution no longer having control of the facility.
"We are at a loss as to understand why," said Ramrattan.
The supply comes from a reservoir that once supplied the old sugar factory which was closed ten years ago.
Ramrattan said the club was calling on the relevant authorities to take action. He believes, however, that there may be a conspiracy afoot to get the club and others removed from the facility since the 33 acres of land is of high value.
The club has more than 100 members, and, according to Ramrattan, raises over $200,000 annually to maintain the site.
