Tamana United captured the first major title of the 2013 SIS California Women's Windball Cricket League when they narrowly won the round-robin competition at the launch of the season on Saturday.
Batting first in the final played at Macaulay Park, California, Tamana scored 20 runs in their allotted three overs and held their opponents, Combine Forces, to 19, winning by one run.
It was double celebration on the day for Tamana United who were selected as the Best Uniformed Team. Sporting attractive pink uniforms, a change from their customary green and white colours, the Tamana ladies cut striking figures on the field of play.
Tamana captain Sylvie Bhola said that her team, which is the defending Knock-Out champion, intends to take its opening-day success to the other major competitions this year. "We want to take this momentum into the league and knock-out competitions," she said after the victory.
Wilton 'Flex' Griffith, founder and coordinator of the league, said the 2013 season should be very competitive since most of the teams were already engaged in other leagues and were showing good form. The California league, he added, was a nurturing ground for women cricketers, several of whom will represent Trinidad and Tobago national team which will tour South Africa in April.
Matches in the league competition, which carries a prize of $8,000 for the champions, bowl off at Macaulay Park, on Sunday, April 7.
