Spearheaded by top athletes Jonah Gordon, Gabriel Smith and Makeda Edwards, West "B" Zone registered its 23rd lien on the Championship trophy of the Pan American Life Insurance Rotary Games. This was on Tuesday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo.
West "B" accumulated 206 points, 85 clear of second-place Central "A" (121) while training partner West A (106) finished 15 points behind in third spot at the event titled "Bouncing At The Top".
Young sprinters Gordon of Diego Martin Boys' RC, Shaniqua Bascombe of Maraval RC, proved to be unbeatable in the 25th edition of the Games.Gordon coasted to victory in both the 100 and 200 metres for 13 -15 boys and looks ready for the National Games carded for the same venue on May 22. Bascombe not to be outdone won the girl's Under-11 80m, 150m and 300m events.
Other good performances came from Alex Pajott and Jamali Lynch of Central A, Jeniel Morris and Smith of West B, Faith Fernando of East B and Jaheim O'Connor and West A's Ethan Forde.
The opening events gave an indication of how the day's proceeding would unfold as the West B Zone won five of the first eight events. And similiarly how it started it ended with the West Zones storming home with five events, to put a seal of approval on the Games. West coach Abeyola Akowe was delighted with her team's performance.
The day opened with a very competitive and colourful march past of teams with music supplied by the Police Services band. The judges selected the all boys team of Mucurapo Boys RC ahead of last year's winner Ascencion Anglican with Four Roads Government in third.
Administrators, who served the Port-of-Spain region during the past 25 years, were honoured. A minute silence was observed for past Port of Spain and Environs walking coach, Ricardo Baptiste, who was died three days before Carnival earlier this year.
