Teenaged golfer Sachin Kumar and his partner Varun Singh, both sponsored by Royards Publishing Company, outplayed many enthusiasts and veterans to take top honours when the Daren Ganga Foundation held its fourth NLCB Annual Golf Tournament at Millennium Lakes Golf Club, Trincity, on Saturday.
Singh and Kumar stood against 50 teams, with a host of current and former national cricketers in attendance including Brian Lara, Mervyn Dillon, Lincoln Roberts and Mark Ramkissoon as well as other sporting stars such as Olympic cyclist Njisane Phillip.
Joining the celebrities were many golf enthusiasts eager to participate in what has become a highly anticipated and competitive tournament. The top 10 teams were awarded attractive prizes provided by sponsors Caribbean Airlines, Bmobile, Angostura Limited, Rash Electronics, Optometrists Today, Golden Key Real Estate, Stetchers and Hilton Trinidad.
Chairman and founder of the charity Daren Ganga applauded the achievements of the young winners.
"It is most fitting that two young men have captured the first prize here today, as the DGF is all about the development of the youth," he said.
Ganga continued, "I am so humbled by the support we have seen this year. It truly is a testament that both corporate T&T and private citizens alike recognise and believe in the work of the foundation. At the heart of all that we do is a desire to give back, and to make a difference in the lives of the young people of our nation. The success of this tournament will ensure that we have the funds to deliver on some of our very impactful programmes this year."
"For this, I am sincerely grateful to our sponsors, participants and all our supporters."
Other sponsors of the tournament included NLCB (the title sponsor), Atlantic, Bmobile, SporTT, the Ministry of Tourism and Blue Waters.
According to Ganga, the foundation's aim essentially is to give talented youth who may not normally have the means (due to geographic location, family-related circumstances or even financial constraints) the opportunity to develop their talents and become well-rounded individuals.
