T&T twins Joshua and Ty Abraham got an early birthday gift on Tuesday when they won the sibling showdown against Bajan brothers Gavin and Matthew Hutchinson in the ITF Junior Tennis Tournament in Barbados.
The Abraham brothers, who will turn 17 on Monday, needed three sets to advance to the quarterfinals of the Boys Under-18 Doubles draw. The Abrahams won the first set 6-3, but 17-year-old Matthew and 15-year-old Gavin bounced back to take the second set 6-3. The twins eventually prevailed 10-7 in the third set. They were scheduled to play their quarterfinal, yesterday evening.
National player Breana Stampfli, had a mixed day at the office on Tuesday. In the Girls Under-18 Doubles Round One match, the number-one seeded pair of Stampfli and Jeung Won Yang of Korea were surprisingly beaten by Jennifer Quenard (Switzerland) and Luisa Stefani (Brazil). Quenard and Stefani won 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.
On the other hand, Stampfli, who is seeded number four in the Girls Under-18 Singles draw, breezed past American Madison Harrison 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals. She was scheduled to play Jenna Friedel of USA yesterday.
