Midfielder Kevin Molino made a positive step towards regaining a spot on the national senior team ahead of the Concacaf Gold Cup in July after putting a goalscoring performance for Orlando City in the USL Pro League on Sunday.
Molino, who signed a new one-year deal with the club scored one goal and had an assist in City's 3-1 win over Phoenix FC. He was named to the USL PRO Team of the Week for Week Three for his efforts.
The 2012 USL PRO Most Valuable Player, sent teammate Long Tan in on goal with a 68th-minute item.
Molino then found the back of the net himself, after a nice give-and-go with Tan which released him into the right side of the penalty area, from where he fired home a finish at the near post.
"It's great to be back among the goals and help Orlando to the win," Molino said.
"The club wants to win more titles this season and I'm happy to be back to help them on the way to achieving this. For me personally, I'm happy to be catching form again and getting good match time.
The Concacaf Gold Cup is coming up in July and I have to be back in the national team for that competition. It will be my first Gold Cup and I definitely want to be involved with the team again," he added.
Edwards also earns top weekly honour
For his injury time screamer against Derby County which gave Ipswich Town a 1-0 win on the weekend, Carlos Edwards was named in the English Championship Division Team of the Week.
Edwards scored his first goal in two years for Ipswich which helped move the Tractor Boys six points clear of the relegation zone.
Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy said: "We burgled it. What we needed was a bit of quality and that is what Carlos produced.
Edwards was also happy with his strike, saying: "It's always a joy to win a game that late and I thought I had to go for it. The shot was on and I had a crack.
"I'm happy it went in and more importantly we were able to get the three points to stay above the relegation zone. Now we've got to dig deep and grind out a couple more good results to ensure we stay up for next season," Edwards said.
US-born goalie sees future with T&T
United Sates-born goalkeeper Johan Welch wants to commit to T&T for life.
The current national Under-17 team goalkeeper kept his first clean sheet at the international level to help T&T defeat Costa Rica 2-0 on Monday and is excited about the prospects of representing T&T at the Under-20 level.
Having a T&T-born father made Welch eligible for T&T after he was discovered at the Dallas Cup prior to him joining the national team for training last year.
"It's been a really good experience for me coming from Houston and making it in the T&T national team. At first I wasn't sure how well I would fit it but it all happened so well and so easily. I'm happy to be part of the team and hopefully we can make it through to the World Cup," Welch said.
"Now I can see myself having a future with T&T. I'll definitely like to help them get to the Under-17 World Cup and then also move on to play for the Under-20s."
Welch is a member of the Houston Dynamo Academy which he says has played a major part in his development so far.
"Being part of the Houston Dynamo Academy has been a major boost for me and it's helped me to become the type of player I am at the moment. Getting a scholarship and going to college is definitely a great plan B and I know my dad wants me to do that but playing professional football is also a major ambition for me," Welch added.
"The T&T Under-17s were last night awaiting the outcome of the Costa Rica/Canada encounter before knowing whether they will advance to the quarterfinals of the Concacaf final round in Panama on the weekend.
Gomez loves the line
Wingback Shannon Gomez has been an attraction at the current Concacaf U-17 World Cup qualifying tournament in Panama for the first couple matchdays.
His high work rate and ability to read the play in the right wing back position has not only helped T&T but has also caught the eye of opposing coaches and scouts present at the tournament.
Word is that Toronto FC has already taken note of the Defence Force player who also represented T&T at the under-20 level last year.
Gomez said the secret to his strong performances is his desire to work hard for 90 minutes.
"For me being able to play the entire wing is something I love and it means I get to be more involved and I also have to work hard which is what football is about for me," he said.
He has his sights set on moving into an overseas environment.
"I'd like to move abroad to learn more of the game. First I'd like to get into a youth academy where I believe I can learn the game more and develop myself as a player before I actually go into a 'big man' team.
"But in the world of football you never know how things go because I'd also like to get a scholarship to go to college. But whatever opportunity comes that allows me to develop my game and move on to better things then I'll definitely consider it," Gomez said.
