Host of the namesake Njisane Three-Day Cycling Festival, T&T's Olympic cyclist Njisane Phillip and his team, Team Siparia, dominated the opening day of competition, which pedaled off at the Arima Velodrome, on Friday night.
Phillip led the charge with victories in the Men's 10-lap International and the International Men Two-lap (handicap), while Spanish international David Muntaner won the arduous Men's International 30-lap to end proceedings on the first day.
In the 10-lap event, Phillip pipped countrymate Kwesi Browne (Team Berlin) in the closest of margins, followed by American David Espinoza in third, before taking the two-lap event, leaving Valentin Savitskiy of Russia in second spot.
It was just one of several thrilling races on the night contested by cyclists of world-class calibre, with teams comprising cyclists of several nationalities facing each other.
The Men's International Elimination race was won by talented 22-year-old protege Albert Torres from Spain. T&T's riders continued to shine.
Despite being edged for the top spot, Adam Alexander took a respectable runner-up finish, while Darren Matthews of Barbados ended third.
Among the ladies, Cuban Lisandra Guerra returned to the Arima Velodrome for the second time in less than a month and yet again awed the crowd with her prowess, as she sealed the International Women's Seven-lap at the expense of Russia's Olga Streltsova and Natasha Hansen on New Zealand, who finished second and third, respectively.
The Women's International Elimination was also captured by Guerra, who sprinted to the finish ahead of American Shelby Reynolds and Mexican double gold medal winner at the World Cycling Championship, Sofia Arreola Navarro.
Guerra, a keirin bronze medal winner at the World Cycling Championship, would, however, finish runner-up this time to another Russian Elina Brezhnivha in the Women's International and Senior One-lap (handicap).
Closing the first day of action was a 20-lap race for the women of which was won by Streltsova, the captain of Team Two (women), followed by the highly-rated Mexican, Navarro.
The event continued last evening but action switched to Skinner Park, San Fernando, where a host of exciting preliminaries and finals were contested.
