Soca Warriors defender continued his liking for opponents Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA when he scored twice for DirecTV W Connection in a 4-0 win to put his team on the brink of qualification for the 2013-2014 Concacaf Champions' League at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva on Friday night.
With Haiti's Baltimore FC failing to arrive for what was expected to be a four-team Group I round-robin series, W Connection, three-time Caribbean Football Union Club Championships winners and four-time runners-up now CFU qualifiers to the CCL with three points ahead of their final match versus Antigua Barracuda FC on Tuesday from 6pm at the same venue.
Today, the Antiguans will meet Caledonia in their opener, with the T&T club needing a win to stay in contention to qualify as the two second place teams from the two CFU qualifying groups being contested will meet to determine the third qualifier to the CCL.
Going into the match, Caledonia which won the CFU club title, 4-3 on penalty-kicks over W Connection last year after a 1-1 draw was eager to avenge a 2-1 loss in the Lucozade Sport Goal Shield semifinal last week to the "Savonetta Boys" in which Jones scored, both his team's goals, the last coming with seconds left in the match. And once again, he was a thorn in the Morvant/Laventille "Stallions" side as he opened the scoring with a left footed effort which skimmed across the wet surface and past the dive of goalkeeper Shemel Louision for a 1-0 lead after only six minutes.
Caledonia then had a chance to draw level n the 17th minute but striker Jamal Gay, after forcing his way past defender Daneil Cyrus, fired straight at W Connection goalkeeper Alejandro Figueroa who collected cleanly at his near post.
Four minutes at the other end, Cyrus had a golden chance to double his team's lead but headed overbar from a cross by Suriname's Stefano Rijssel, while Jones was denied a second goal in the 26th by a goalmouth clearance from Kareem Joseph in the 26th.
However, from the resulting corner, W Connection midfielder Andrei Pacheco took advantage of some sloppy defending by Caledonia to head home his team's second. Faced with an uphill task of getting back into the match, Caledonia pressed forward with Nathan Lewis forcing goalkeeper
Figueroa into a diving save to keep out his drive from about 25-yards out while Joseph's 35-yard free-kick was narrowly deflected over. The nippy Jones, the son of former national defender Kelvin Jones almost made it 3-0 in the 37th but goalkeeper Louision was up to the task this time and turned the left footed curler away for a corner while a minute before the half, he was presented with another chance on goal by the goalkeeper who raced off his line to head clear.
Luckily for Louison and his team-mates, Jones' looping effort with the goal unguarded just missed the target as his team went in 2-0 up. On the resumption, Caledonia coach introduced veteran midfielder Densill Theobald for Vurlon Mills in the 55th but he could do little to stop the dominant W Connection as Jones made it 3-0 in the 81st minute before Rijssel completed the 4-0 win by blasting a strike past a hapless Louision a minute from full-time.
