Local club, DirecTV W Connection will be confident of sealing the lone automatic spot available from Group One of the Caribbean Football Union qualifiers to the Concacaf Champions League (CCL) when it faces cellar-placed Antigua Barracuda in the final match at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva 6 pm today.
Currently, the Couva-based W Connection which has qualified for the main draw of the CCL twice in the past, in 2009/2010 and 2012/2013 since the tournament was revamped eight year ago, sits at the top of its three-team round-robin group with three points following a 4-0 thrashing of fellow Digicel T&T Pro League club, Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA in the tournament's curtain raiser on Friday at the same venue led by a double from Soca Warriors defender, Joevin Jones.
Caledonia, meanwhile stayed in the hunt to qualify for the home-and-away qualifiers for the second placed teams in the two group after it whipped Barracuda 3-1 on Sunday.
Tonight, Jones who has been in ominous form over the last month is expected to once again lead his team's attack which also includes Suriname's Stefano Rijssell, Andre Pachecho, Hashim Arcia, Clyde Leon and teenaged midfielder Jomal Williams against a Barracuda's line-up which is without a win in its last four competitive matches.
A win for W Connection will see it earn the automatic spot straight to the CCL while Caledonia will end second and face the runner-up from Group Two in a home-and-away playoff.
However, Barracuda's which campaigns in the US Pro Division League can also qualify, but needs a big win over W Connection to do so.
A win for Barracuda's over W Connection, the three-time Caribbean Football Union Club Championships winners and four-time runners-up now tonight, which will see all three teams ending with three points, and the qualifiers needing to be determined on goal-difference.
While the crowds have been non-existent over the first two matches, W Connection will for one night at least have the full support of Caledonia according to the Morvant/Laventille based club coach Jerry Moe.
"Caledonia will be there supporting W Connection, hoping that they can pull off a win or even a draw against the Antiguans," assured Moe yesterday.
"A result of that sort will send W Connection through automatically and give us a chance in the playoffs as the second place team," added Moe.
With regards to his own team's performances in their two matches, Moe said they didn't play to their true potential.
"When our boys play well, I let them know, and when they don't play too well, I also let them know," said the Caledonia coach.
"We played flat and not as a team who had the chance of topping the group on Sunday night. We needed to win by a wider margin of goals and we didn't. We had all the possession but as the home team who really needed the big win, we didn't play with enough urgency."
And while Caledonia, last year's CFU Club champions sits in the waiting area, the technical staff will have to prepare for the possibilities as its remaining matches in the Digicel T&T Pro League where it still has a shot at
the title.
With two matches left in the league Caledonia is second with 39 points, four behind Defence Force (43 points) and seven points clear of third placed and last year's champions W Connection.
Moe said, "We gave the players two days off because next week we have a very important (Digicel Pro League) match against Central FC. If by some miracle Defence Force drop points, then we have a chance at the title. And if W Connection wins on Tuesday against Barracudas we'd have to prepare for the playoffs in May and also give some of the players rest in between. So we are thinking long term and short term. But all that will be dependent on the result on Tuesday (today) and Pro League results on Monday."
Over in Kingston, Jamaica, the final round of matches in Group Two will also take place at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, Kingston will three clubs still in the hunt for qualification.
On Sunday night, Haitian club Valencia followed up its 3-1 defeat of Puerto Rico's Bayamon FC 3-1 with a pulsating 4-3 win over Portmore United to take a massive step towards qualifying for the 2013/14 CCL, while Boys' Town reignited its campaign with a 2-0 victory over Bayamon FC.
Going into today's final round of matches, Valencia leads Group Two with maximum six points, three ahead of the Jamaican pair of Boys' Town and Portmore United while Bayamon FC is still looking for its first points.
Tonight, Portmore takes on Bayamon at 7pm and needs a win to put pressure on both Valencia and Boys' Town who clash two
hours later.
