Top junior Justin Roberts of Team DPS copped gold with a flawless three wins in the last three Omnium events, to dominate the multi-skill series of races, at the National Cycling Championships, which continued at the Arima Velodrome, on Sunday.
In all three events, the 4km individual pursuit, the scratch race and the 1km time trial, the finishing positions remained consistent as Roberts emerged victorious, while Urba Bourne took the runner-up spot and Kasim Charles-Walcott third. The three final races, as well as the 30-lap points race were used as criteria for selection for the upcoming Junior Pan American Cycling Championship.
Roberts took his events on a high after winning the first three omnium races a day prior, while Bourne and Charles-Walcott were left to battle for second and third.
On Sunday, the men's elite division went down to the final event as only four points separated first from fourth heading into the final event, the 1km time trial.
In the end, Roberts' clubmate Jovian Gomez saved his best for last as he clocked a time which saw him overtake Marc Codrington to secure the overall omnium title. Codrington ended second followed by third-placed finisher Rudy Ashton. It was a good outing for Ashton, who moved from fifth on the opening day to the eventual bronze.
Action will resume tomorrow (Wednesday) with junior and elite men and women as well as masters in action. The individual pursuit and time trial events will dominate the day's proceedings.
