Juvenile rider Keiana Lester continued to shine on Wednesday night, as action continued in the T&T Cycling Federation's (TTCF) National Cycling Championships, when she set a new track record of 39.528 seconds in the junior women 500m time trial at the Arima Velodrome.
The event, which was used as a trial for the 2013 Junior Pan American Cycling Championship, saw four riders–Lester, Kollyn St George, Joy Abigail-John and Aziza Browne–dip below the 41-second standard.
In the end the event was won by Browne (40.207 seconds), with Cheyenne Awai finishing second (42.381 seconds).
Degree Madonna's Kasim Charles Walcott captured the junior men's 3km individual pursuit in 4:07.337, while Urba Bourne, who was in constant battle for second and third in the omnium events, finished runner-up in 4:14.462.
In the elite men's 4km individual pursuit, Jovian Gomez of Team DPS set the fastest qualifying time in 5:10:00. Gomez then went on to dominate in the gold medal ride-off catching Troy Nelson to end the event.
Impressive yet again was undisputed junior omnium champion Justin Roberts, who smashed a new record in the junior's 1km time trial in 1:08.126, leaving Samuel Mahabir, the runner-up, more than seven seconds behind. Roberts erased Quincy Alexander's record, who now as an elite cyclist incidentally broke a new record of his own en route to the 1km time trial gold. Alexander smashed a two-year-old record set by Olympic cyclist Njisane Phillip, when he finished in 1:06.326.
Tonight, action will continue with a flurry of sprint events at the Arima Velodrome, from 7 pm.
