Jonathan Farinha, Shakeil Waithe, Kenejah Williams and Akeel Edwards were among the outstanding performers on the final day of the National Junior Track and Field Championshps at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, on Sunday.
Farinha (Abilene Wilcats) sped to victory in the boys under 18 200m in a personal best of 21.01 seconds. He dipped under the World Youth qualifying standard of 21.40 and also the Pan American Junior mark of 21.20. The Queen's Royal College student had added reason to celebrate as his twin brother Nathan was second in 21.67. Roberto Boyde of Xceed of St Vincent and the Grenadine was third in 21.88.
Waithe (Zenith) secured the boys' under 20 javelin title with a throw of 63.46 to get past the Pan American Junior mark of 61.00 while Williams (Tobago Falcons) got over the 17.70 World Youth standard in the boys' under 18 shot put with a winning effort of 17.92. The 2012 Carifta and CAC Junior gold medallist also achieved a personal best.
Edwards (Toco TAFAC) bettered the Pan Am Junior mark (15.00) for the boys' under 20 triple jump. He achieved 15.04 in the fourth round.
Williams was among several double winners at the two day meet after he won the discus on Saturday with a distance of 49.43. Also doubling up were: Portious Warren (Toco TAFAC)- girls' under 18 shot put/javelin, Aaron Lewis (Zenith)–boys under 18 110m hurdles/400m hurdles, Jeminise Parris (Memphis Pioneers)–girls' under 18 100m hurdles/400m hurdles, Reubin Walters (Memphis Pioneers)–boys' under 20 110m hurdles/400m hurdles, Elia Nero (Neon Trackers) girls' under 20 800m/1500m, Thyla-Marie Scott (Cougars)–girls' under 18 400m/800m, Jereem Richards (Abilene Wildcats)- boys under 200m/400m, Kayelle Clarke (Petrotrin PAP)–girls' under 18 100m/200m and Ashton Gill (Cougars)- boys under 800m/1500m.
Warren, Lewis, Parris join Farinha and Williams as qualifiers for the World Youth Championships. Warren got over the shot put mark of 13.50 in winning the girls' under 18 event with a distance of 13.83, while Lewis captured the boys under 18 110m hurdles in 13.93, dipping under the 14.40 World Youth mark. Parris sped past the girl under 18 100m hurdles standard of 14.55 winning in 14.39.
The 2013 World Youth Championships are carded for Donetsk, Ukraine from July 9 to 14 while the Pan American Junior Championships are set for Medillin, Colombia from August 23 to 25.
