University of Florida swimmer, Christian Homer and Mc Leod brothers, Joshua and Abraham, will spearhead T&T's medal hopes at the Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation (CCCAN) Championships scheduled for San Jose, Costa Rica from June 29 to July 9.
Two years ago in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, T&T led by Joshua Mc Leod captured six gold medals, five from USA-based Dylan Carter, inclusive of three records, three from Joshua Romany and two apiece from Kimberlee John-Williams and Kristien Julien for a record 22 gold medals in their 51 medal haul (19 silver and 10 bronze).
Howell Napoleon and the 15-17 boys 400 metre freestyle relay team as well as the 18 & Over boys 400m freestyle and medley quartets also got gold for T&T which ended with 622 points for third place, behind host Puerto Rico (1029.5 pts) and Mexico (997.5)
For the team in San Jose, which serves as a qualifier to the World Championships, Homer, a junior Olympic gold medallist and World Senior Swimming Championship qualifiers Joshua and Abraham will have as team-mates Caryle Blondell, Cadell Lyons, Cherelle Thompson, Samantha Rahael, Jabari Baptiste, Jeron O'Brien, Julien, Amira Pilgrim, Jada Chai, Jewel Mulrain and Ariel Cape
However, T&T chances of another top three finish and overhauling their best ever medal tally of 54 (2009) was severly dented with the withdrawal of a number of overseas-based swimmers headed by David Nadadores swimmer and the University of Southern California bound-Carter and Romany.
Carter, recently participated at the Santa Clara Grand Prix where he sat a new record in the 200m butterfly in 2:09.44, a new national mark in the 15-17 boys age-group and is a qualifier for August World Junior Championship in Dubai.
Others, who have asked to be excused, include Florida-based Tyla Martin after qualifying for Dubai, Hannah Chatfield (England), Alexandra Donahue, Rebecca Marshall (England), Adrian Goin (Canada), Emiro Goossen (USA) and Marlins' Jonathan Ramkissoon, who is also Dubai-bound.
T&T will also be represented by a boys and girls Open Water teams as well as Under-17 girls and boys and boys Open water polo teams.
