Arima Hawks (women) and the University of T&T (UTT) led by national champions, 14-year-old Brittany Joseph and Curtis Humphreys will both be confident of repeating as champions when the Solo-sponsored National Table-Tennis Championship Team Championships serve off today.First serve will be at the Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Saith Park, Chaguanas, from 9.30 am with the women's and open second division followed by the men's and open para singles two hours later.
Joseph, who claimed her first-ever national senior singles crown last year will team up with fellow senior national women's team player, Linda Partap-Boodhan and Natalie Montes for Arima who will face stiff competition from UTT, led by nine-time national champion, Aleena Edwards and her sister, Astra Edwards-Bennett.The men's field is much more interesting with UTT having to contend with Hawks, Solo Crusaders, D'Abadie Youths, Solo Crusaders and Carenage Blasters.In addition to Humphreys, the UTT squad, which defeated Hawks 3-2 in last year's title match and currently leads the National First Division League table with five straight wins, includes his brother, Alaric Humphreys, Kenwin Small, Kyle Borneo and Kyle Bennett.
For Hawks, which will be represented by two teams, the quartet of five-time national singles champion and current T&T Table Tennis Association president, Reeza Burke, Lionel Darceuil and teenager Arun Roopnarine, just back from a recent month-long training stint in Europe, will comprise it's A-team while Dave Williams, Mark Modeste, Garfield Gay, Kerron Ali and Keyon Williams make up the B-team.Crusaders will pin its title hopes on the shoulders of former national champion, Anthony "Sandfly" Brown, US-based Dayanand Maharaj, Terry Corbin, Andrew Alexander and Collin Cudjoe while former UTT player and member of last year's winning team, US-based Yuvraj Dookram, teams up with Michael Nanton, Everton Sorzano, Declan John and Haadiy Brooker in the D'Abadie squad.
Aaron Wilson leads Blasters title-bid and will be supported by Nigel Morgan, Khadeem Moore, Rakellon Pierre and Michael Noel while Oxford is the other entered team and will feature Selwyn Singh, Kirk Mohammed and Anthony Laquis.Tomorrow, the doubles event will commence with the Humphreys brothers defending their men's title, and Joseph and Partap-Boodhan, the women while Curtis Humphreys and Aleena Edwards are the defending mixed doubles champions.
