Last week, off-spinner Sunil Narine created history when he became the first Trinidad and Tobago bowler to be named the top One Day International bowler ranked by the International Cricket Council (ICC).Narine, 26, shot to world prominence after a series of outstanding performances with the ball firstly with the Trinidad and Tobago T20 team, finalists in the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) and then with the Kolkota Knight Riders where he was snapped up in their annual auction for US $700,000.
He duly rewarded the team for the confidence placed in him by being named "Player of the Series" when the KKK owned by Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan emerged champions in 2012.
But it was Narine who stole the show, beguiling batsmen with his variety of twirlers who after several seasons are yet to come to terms with the Arima native who is instinctively recognisable by his stylish Mohawk hairstyle. And in its usual understated style, the T&T Cricket Board has acknowledged that Narine is one of their brightest stars who has emerged from their excellently executed development programmes stretching back several years.
Not that Narine is their only product of these programmes to ascend the international ladder and help T&T to establish itself as a brand worthy of attracting the largest cricket clubs in the world.Among the others who have benefited greatly from the T&T development programmes are current T20 superstars Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Kevon Cooper, Ravi Rampaul and to a lesser extent Samuel Badree, all who have caught the eyes of talent scouts.
However, the T&T Cricket Board is singular in fosterting the development of their players to the highest levels despite being starved of funds which have usually been disbursed by the Ministry of Sports. But such is the reputation of the officials of the T&T Cricket Board and the confidence shown in their leadership that corporate citizens have come forward to contribute valuable sponsorship to germinate and develop talent like Narine, Pollard, Bravo and the rest.Among those who have recognised the brand of T&T cricket are the National Gas Company, First Citizens, Caribbean Airlines, Gatorade, the Public Transport Service, Corporation, Atlantic LNG, BGTT andBlue Waters.
