El Dorado North Hindu and Dinsley Government reigned supreme yesterday, as the curtains closed in the RBC Royal Bank-sponsored 30th Annual Inter-Primary Block-Up Windball cricket competition at the Eastern Regional Complex, Tacarigua.
In the boys league final, El Dorado defeated St Joseph TML comfortably by 53 runs, while Dinsley got past St Joseph Girls by six wickets in the girls league final.
On Tuesday, El Dorado lost the final of the boys knockout competition to Bamboo Government by six wickets, but did not let that disappointment affect their performance. "Put that game behind you." This is what El Do's assistant coach Kimraj Partap, told his team before the start of yesterday's match.
Batting first in this 12-over match, openers Varun Partap, son of the assistant coach, and Nicolai Beharrysingh got El Do off to a brisk start. At the halfway mark, they already had 56 on the board with all their wickets intact. Partap was run out shortly after for 23. Beharrysingh was joined by Jerome Jaggernauth at the crease, and the latter was in a no-nonsense mood. In the ninth over, Jaggernauth struck two sixes that led to a 15-run over. El Do were now racing along at 85/1, with three overs remaining.
Beharrysingh showed wisdom beyond his years, giving Jaggernauth more of the strike as the more aggressive batsman. Jaggernauth continued his onslaught, finishing on 37 not out, which included four sixes and two fours. Beharrysingh pitched in with 28, as El Do posted a challenging 116/1.
In response, St Joseph TML were struggling after six overs at 29/1. Daryan Parks and Shazad Mohammed showed some determination, batting out the remaining innings. Unfortunately for St Joseph, they could only muster 63 in their 12 overs.
Earlier in the girls ten-over final, right-handed Kallima Bissessar scored an unbeaten 20, as Dinsley chased 55 in 7.1 overs to win the match. St Joseph Girls RC made 54/1 behind Annalee Amow's 11 not out. In an interview after the match, Patricia Lee Quay, coach of Dinsley said, "We are ecstatic that we won, last year we had a strong team, but this year the team came together. The principal and parents were supportive, helping with transport."
