SIS held by IPSL
The SIS Industrial Football League continued on Wednesday as the Group Stage came to a close with a full slate of matches in Point Lisas. A critical qualifying encounter took place between IPSL’s Methanol Division and SIS, with the hosts needing at least a point to see themselves through to the quarterfinal round. SIS seemed to struggle early on as they tried to find their rhythm and gave away possession very easily in the midfield which resulted in several missed chances by MX who rained shots on goal. SIS’s defense stood strong against the onslaught of MX’s strikers until the 15th minute when MX was able to capitalise on a corner kick.
T London drove in a strong kick that found its way into the goal after a lovely back flick by No 7 J Quashi. The rest of the half was dominated by MX with some probing passes and lovely ball movement but the half ended 1-0 in favour of the methanol boys. The second half began amidst crowd cheers of “Let’s go SIS…MX…stays solid!” as both teams took the field with all to play for. SIS’s half time pep talk by coach Ainsworth Martinez seemed to work as they played a more attacking brand of football with some fluent ball movement that penetrated MX’s backline and created several chances.
Early on Chad Baptiste and Moriba Vance combined beautifully using pure skill in a one-two play that saw the final header go just wide of the upright. The pair combined again with just three minutes left in the game as they ran at MX’s defense without fear knowing that it was do or die for their team. Chad Baptiste turned savior as he netted the equaliser for his team that ensured they would secure the final qualifying spot in the group. The quarterfinals are now set and will take place on Monday as SIS will take on group A winner IPSL AUM and second place NGC will lock horns with Plipdeco. Group B winners and newcomers to the league, EBSL, will have to negotiate defending champions T&TEC, while MX and Nu Iron will meet each other in an intriguing encounter. The semifinals will take place on Wednesday August 28 with the Grand Finals to be held on Friday August 30 at the Plipdeco Ground in Point Lisas.
