East Mucurapo, Saints clash in SSFL curtain raiser
Former champion, East Mucurapo, known as “Compre” and St Mary’s College will both be eager for a solid start as they meet in the BGTT/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League’s (SSFL) North Zone opener, in the first match of a double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo from 3.30 pm.
Two hours later, the “Westmooring Tigers” of St Anthony College, winners of the North Zone league for the past three years, and the reigning Coca-Cola InterCol title-holders face off with Central Zone powerhouse and the defending national “Big-Five” winner Carapichaima East Secondary, in the inaugural, Ormond Gabriel trophy clash.
The cup match is being held in commemoration of Osmond Gabriel, a former general secretary of the SSFL, who served from 1972-1992.
However, while the meeting between St Anthony’s joint record six-time winners of the national InterCol, equalled only by Naparima College, and East Carapichaima will no doubt hold keen interest, the zonal battle between East Mucurapo, last time zonal league winners four years and the “Saints” as St Mary’s are known will be of much more significance.
Last year, East Mucurapo was second to the Tigers by six points while the “Saints” were a distant fourth on the seven team-table and with both teams expected to feature a core of returning players from last year, it should make for a very interesting contest.
In today’s second encounter, coach Nigel Grosvenor and his Tigers, who have seen a few players depart inclusive of captain Jamali Garcia and striker Adrian Millette, will have revenge on their minds as it was Carapichaima East which ended its 33-match unbeaten run in the SSFL league and knockout dating back to the start of the 2011 campaign with a 1-0 beating in the Big-Five semifinals last year.
In addition, to St Anthony’s, East Mucurapo and St Mary’s the other schools in the seven-team North Zone are Queen’s Royal College, Fatima College, Diego Martin North Secondary and promoted Malick Secondary.
Tomorrow, the East, Central, South and Tobago Zones will all commence league competition from 3 pm at the Arima Munucipal Stadium, Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva; Skinner Park, San Fernando, and Shaw Park Sporting Complex respectively.
