Blake, Williams for P/Rico beach vball
The local pairs of Simon Blake and Daneil Williams, and Ayana Dyette and Nancy Joseph will represent T&T at the seventh Leg of the Norceca Beach Volleyball Circuit to be staged in Puerto Rico from September 18 to 23.
This is after both teams won their respective one-day qualifying competitions hosted by the T&T Volleyball Federation at the Saith Park, Chaguanas Beach Volleyball Courts on August 27.
In the men’s final, Williams and Blake dominated Fabien Whitfield and Colin Bernard, 21-9, 22-20.
In the semifinals, Williams and Blake swept past Malik Springle and Kadaine Hope, and Whitfield paired with Bernard to beat Jason Dennis and Kevin Rivers
Last year, Whitfield and Williams created history by securing a first ever medal for T&T on the tour, bronze on home soil in front of their Toco fans, during the tenth and final leg at Mission Beach.
The women’s qualifier was contested on a round-robin basis featuring four teams, and in the decider, Dyette and Joseph, got the better of their former playing partners, Elki Phillip and Pauline Joseph, 21-11, 15-21, 15-11 to end with a perfect 3-0 record.
In their other matches, Dyette and Joseph who reached the semifinals of the tenth and final leg of last year’s tour on home soil in Toco whipped Shenelle Gordon and Aphia Glasgow 21-10, 21-13 and Kinesha Marshall and Jenelle Mieux 21-7, 21-16, while Woodroffe and Phillip defeated Gordon and Glasgow 21-10, 21-12; and Marshall and Mieux 21-12, 21-5 in their two other matches for second spot.
The runners-up of both events, Whitfield and Bernard, and Phillip and Woodroffe will still have their chance to represent T&T on the Norceca tour, as a decision was taken by the T&TVF to allow the teams to participate in the sixth leg of the Norceca Circuit in Cuba from Wednesday until Monday.
This was due to the fact that T&T did not field any teams for the fifth-leg of the tour which was held in Cuba last month.
So far this season on the Norceca Circuit, Blake and Williams had to settle for fifth in the third leg at Campo Marte Park, Guatemala City, Guatemala back in April; while they were 11th out of 16 men’s teams in the opening tournament of the season, the fifth edition of the Cayman Islands Beach Volleyball Tournament in March
Among the women, T&T’s Elki Phillip and Apphia Glasgow were 12th in their first tournament of the season while LasTeisha Joseph and Kinesha Marshall were winless in Guatemala after no T&T women’s team participated in the first two events in Cayman Islands and Dominican Republic.
The remainder of the tour for the 2013 season will feature stops in San Diego, USA (October 2 to 7), St Lucia (October 9 to 14), Costa Rica (October 30 to November 4) and T&T, from November 13 to 18.
